You know that character in all of these movies who starts out cracking bad jokes and full of bravado, only to fall apart when the chips are down and start whingeing: "It's over, man! We're all gonna die!"  

But somehow his whingeing leaches energy from all those around him and ultimately bursts out in one last, heroic act of (usually) self-sacrifice that helps save the day!
